Stuffed and Starved, Mexican Vegans, Tegra Little

So I always have 1001 books that I am reading at once. Here is the latest one on the radar by a brother of Indian descent Raj Patel called "Stuffed and Starved". So far it is ill and I recomend it to folks. Here's a clip from the intro:

An argument that I find myself making over and over is that although diet is a very personal thing, it can be understood sociologically. And not only can it be understood this way, you have to understand it this way if you're to make sense of facts like one which I start the book with: that the closer Mexican teenagers are to the US border, the more likely they are to be overweight.

The dynamics of consumption that have been imposed on Mexico by its more powerful northern neighbour are having some profound effects. Mohammed writes with this article, which announces that Mexico is the second-most overweight country in the world, after the US, and if trends continue, will soon outweigh the gringos. More than 71 percent of Mexican women and 66 percent of Mexican men are overweight, according to the latest national surveys.

Interesting, and repugnant, are the comments that the online readers of the Arizona star have appended to the article. It links up with another sociological phenomenon about obesity - newspaper reports are systematically more likely, as Abigail Saguy says, "Given that higher weights are inversely correlated with social class in heterogeneous and affluent societies such as the United States and that African American and Mexican American women are especially likely to be categorized as obese, blaming fat people for their weight may serve to justify and reinforce social inequities."

Can't get to this without a little sociology.

The website for the book is nice with a blog and several other features. Check it out at Starved and Stuffed He also has a personal website over at Raj Patel.

Again, in my quest for various ethnic plant centered meals I've come across Vegan Mexican food. Check them out cause I'm all about learning how to make a vegan mole sauce and eventually make a raw one. They are a segment of the Food Empowerment Project which looks to be doing great things.

Finally check out Tegra Little and how she is making raw foodism her life and living

Deez Nuts

So I mentioned to a friend of mines that I sip on coconut water cause it is the natural gatoraid. I was going my hardcore 52 Hand Block work out (I'm back on the block son..don't test...yanowan nonoftis) and got a leg cramp. Took a shot of that joint and was feeling good. I also mentioned to them how it was used for BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS. Oh yeah...no more blood banks...coconut groves..what's up. Anywho...here are some coconut facts that came from an article I found (cited at the end of the jiz-oint).

Many persons have gone to the Caribbean, the Pacific Islands, Florida, Hawaii, South America or Southern Asia and have tasted some very refreshing coconut water. The palm trees you have become accustomed to while on vacation are very potent sources of coconut water that has many health benefits and uses that you probably did not know about. Coconut water is the purest liquid second only to water itself. It is chock full of electrolytes, calcium, potassium, magnesium; everything that is good for you.

Coconut water is the liquid that is taken from unripe coconuts. If coconuts get ripe the liquid that is inside will harden and become a part of the white flesh of the coconut, which is used to make coconut milk. So, picking the coconut while it is unripe will ensure that the body gets all the benefits of coconut water.

Coconut Water Hydrates the Body

Coconut water is an isotonic solution which replaces the fluids and minerals that the body loses during physical activities. For this reason, many athletes and persons who work out regularly are encouraged to drink coconut water to replace all the minerals and fluid that they lose while working out. Even the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) attest to the benefits of drinking coconut water when it fought for a patent in 2000 to market coconut water as the next big sports drinks.

Coconut Water Relieves Urinary Problems

If you consume coconut water on a regular basis it can reduce urinary problems. People who suffer from strangury, polyutra and other urinary ailments drink coconut water to relieve their symptoms.

Coconut Water Kills Intestinal Worms

Drinking coconut water with one teaspoon of olive oil for three days will kill intestinal worms and clear the stomach of worms, which makes for better digestion.

Coconut Water Breaks up Kidney Stones

People who have kidney problems and are plagued by kidney stones should drink coconut water in addition to taking their medication. Drinking coconut water regularly helps to break up kidney stones making them easier to push out.

Coconut Water is Used in Blood Transfusion

Coconut water is almost identical to blood plasma and this makes it easy to use for blood transfusion. In cases of emergency coconut water has been used as an intravenous hydration fluid instead of the standard IV fluid. During World War II many wounded soldiers were saved in the Pacific because of emergency transfusion using coconut water as plasma.

Coconut Water is an Antibacterial

Coconut water contains monolaurin, an antiviral, antibacterial and antiprozoal monoglyceride that is used to kill lipid-coated viruses such as HIV, Herpes, cytomegalovirus, flu and various pathogenic bacteria.

Coconut Water Controls Vomiting

Coconut water is great at reducing vomiting. People who have typhoid, malaria, fevers or other ailments that are known to induce vomiting drink coconut water to settle the stomach. As such, coconut water is also a good thing to drink during a hangover.

Green or unripe coconuts can be found in Asian and West Indian markets. All coconuts that they sell are closed up to keep coconut water from losing its nutrients. So, if you plan on buying a coconut, you can ask someone to chop the coconut open or you can open it yourself at home and drink it.

Cacti

So when you think of a cactus the image of a tall green thingie with two up turned arms with thorns on it standing alone in the middle of the desert comes to mind. It is such an iconic image that one doesn't realize that it blooms with flowers or that there are other types of cactus. And one, if one has been so indoctrinated surely doesn't think that you can eat it or parts of it.

My first introduction into the cacti world was via FaaTma who put me on to Agave Nectar as a sweetener. It's my favorite sweetener now where as before I mainly used date sugar. The liquid alternative is on an poppin. For the record it can also be used by diabetics (phuck those artificial sweeteners).

Now I've been hit in the head recently by nopales. Everywhere I go I would find a reference to it. Shoot, when I popped over the ChelB's spot I noticed that she had a whole post on it. I am firmly convinced that my Mexican veggie peeps have been holding out on me (yeah..don't front). Then I ran into my Brown sista Metztli who dropped the recipe on me...yeah...it's that fly.

It proves again though my platform. Original Peoples indigenous cuisines have elements in it that can be adapted to plant centric diets. In fact, truth be told, who do you think the white vegans got INSPIRED by. There are no vegetarian traditions in post Greek Europe.

So eat up some cactus folks.
